That Unexpected Moment I Spotted Myself on Volunteering New Zealand

You know that moment when you're casually scrolling online and suddenly… bam! — there’s your name, your face, or a snapshot of something you poured your heart into? That was me recently when I stumbled across a post by Volunteering New Zealand — and to my surprise, it highlighted the work I’d done with the Ōtaki Kids Market.
Honestly, I did a double take.
It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day hustle of organising events, mentoring young entrepreneurs, coordinating with stallholders, and navigating council conversations about potholes and signage (yes, it’s all part of the job). But seeing the work spotlighted from the outside — through the lens of a national volunteering platform — was a moment of wow. It reminded me of the power of small actions and local passion.
My fellow volunteers Kara, Michelle, Chrissy, and Tracey — What a team! I truly value each of you and everything you bring to the table. Here’s to more great work (and fun) ahead!
"On this King's Birthday, we celebrate those whose service embodies the true spirit of community honours. Claire Roper is our perfect example - a volunteer whose dedication has led to national media recognition and, more importantly, has transformed lives. Her commitment to nurturing confidence, creativity, and sustainability in young people is exactly the kind of service we celebrate. Sometimes the most powerful changes start with the simplest intentions. Claire wanted to spend meaningful time with her mum after returning from the UK, so they began volunteering at the Ōtaki Market. What started as a mother-daughter bonding activity has blossomed into something extraordinary - the Ōtaki Kids Market, which has now supported over 600 young entrepreneurs since 2023. Claire’s journey reminds us that while not everyone receives official honours, the spirit of service she represents is what truly matters. She’s living proof that when we invest in young people and give them space to grow, magic happens."

If you spot someone you know being celebrated online, share it. Tag them. Cheer them on. And if you spot yourself — take a moment to feel proud. You’ve earned it.
🧡 Volunteering isn’t about the limelight — but hey, sometimes it’s nice when the light finds you
